There are three main qualities I want and value in an ideal information stream:
-
Balanced
For non-political topics, I do not want any national-level political bias of any sort. This means the reporting does not discuss party-driven narratives, although geopolitical, national-level bias is likely to be impossible to avoid. Where topics exist that wander into the realm of politics, I at least want to receive information from multiple perspectives to balance the discussion.
-
Aligned
The information that is shown to me is deeply aligned with my personal goals and interests. I don’t want distractions or algorithmic content that keeps me engaged but does not serve the purpose of moving me towards my goals. The information presented to me should be highly relevant.
-
Enriching
I want dense, carefully researched, and well-written material that is engaging because it is of such high-quality work, rather than being optimized to spike the dopamine in my lizard brain. Also, the stream of information contains elements of serendipitous discovery—information that I’m interested in that I didn’t know I was interested in.
