The engineering state has invested an incomprehensible amount of resources into infrastructure and housing for it’s people over the last 3 decades. This investment has served as an economic launch pad for the people of the country. Not just tangibly, but psychologically and socially.
The citizens of Chinese have immense pride for the rapid growth of their country because they have seen it with their own eyes. They can almost sit and watch the skyline of their city evolve before their own eyes. It is a force of unification. The people, with the same pride and experiences, are more willing to co-operate and work together.
For a country with over 1 billion people, this is indispensable and serves as a legitimating force for the national identity and the Communist party.
