The analytical perspective of the Chinese government as an “Engineering Society” helps to explain the country’s economic model of “a socialist country with Chinese characteristics.”

Since the 1990’s the Chinese government has been filled with politicians whose education and background are from engineering. The standard operating policy of an engineer is to build things. The result is the massive mega projects we see from the West - Shining cities, excellence in public transport and the manufacturing base of the world.

It also explains why China, in so many ways, resembles a right-wing dictatorship - providing low welfare, enforcing traditional gender roles, and blocking immigration. Namely, it is because the engineering mind seeks to control outcomes, and this requires social engineering.
