As our understanding of the world expanded, as science replaced religion as the dominant method of understanding the world, the mystique of the world was also lost. With the loss of spirituality, we also lost our personal and communal roles in any kind of higher order or direction of the universe. In losing that, we lost an explanation for why we suffer.
