Sartre was incredibly authentic in that his actions reflected his beliefs. When he was offered the Légion d’honneur for his war efforts, and the Nobel Prize in literature in 1964, he turned them down. He believed a writer must be independent of bias and external incentives, saying “My life and my philosophy are one and the same.”
