Progressive Overload is the concept in sport science that in order to improve, the limits of ones capability must be continually pushed.

Example: To get better and bench press, you must continually add more weight to the bar in order to force the body to adapt.

However, this concept applies far beyond the reach of sport science. It is certainly true for skill acquisition. But it may also be true in terms of less tangibly measurable fields like charity, faith, or creative thinking.
